<image:caption>Girl with a farming tool and a doll in a rural village near Chugchilán, Ecuador. Many poor parents do not send their children to secondary school due to costs and children in school who are not able to contribute to family income. Of the children (ages 5 to 17) involved in child labor, 24.9% do not attend school. Statistics worsen with ethnicity and higher levels of education: 48% of indigenous adolescents do not attend secondary school in rural areas, and 37 to 40% do not attend secondary school in urban areas. However, overall social welfare statistics are improving and many attribute this to policy reform. In 2015, 22.5% of the nation lives below the poverty line. This is a drop of 10% since 2010.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For many, a visit to Cuba can feel like a step back in time. Everywhere you look is an old-school American brand vehicle, ranging from Oldsmobile to Chevrolet, Buick to Ford. This is due to a ban on car imports implemented when Fidel Castro took power in 1959. For over fifty years, Cubans bought, sold and repaired the same cars. Only officials, doctors and others with government connections or proof of foreign exchange income were allowed to purchase new imported cars. Just over two years ago, the current President and brother of Fidel, Raúl Castro, lifted the ban and allowed all citizens the opportunity to buy imported cars. However, it is clear the large majority of Cubans do not have the means to purchase new vehicles. Cienfuegos, Cuba.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At 3650 metres above sea level, La Paz, Bolivia, is the worlds highest administrative capital (technically, the capital of Bolivia is Sucre). To deal with the altitude, locals and tourists chew or make tea from coca leaves. The same plant used to manufacture cocaine. In most countries outside of South America, possession of coca leaves are illegal. However, the plant is prominent in traditional Andean cultures. Coca leaves do not give the high people experience with cocaine, and it used for medicinal and nutritional purposes. Bolivian President Evo Morales is an outspoken advocate for the global legalisation of the plant. Fun-fact: the original recipe of Coca Cola contains coca leaves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Outside a cinema in Havana, Cuba. In October 2013, the Cuban government banned privately run cinemas. The state closed many 2D and 3D salons in homes and restaurants. Although the communist nation has relaxed restrictions against the private sector in the past decade, the government announced in the state run newspaper Granma it needed to bring "order" to the management of independent businesses. According to the BBC, government run cinemas shy away from showing Hollywood and other mainstream films. More recently, the NY Times reported that Miguel Coyula, a Cuban filmmaker, had his crow-funding campaign suspended on Indiegogo. After he raised US$5200, the website determined that transferring funds to Cuba or a Cuban resident would violate the United States’ economic embargo. The lift of the U.S. sanctions against Cuba will change the face of independent Cuban cinema. Film-makers will be able to receive financial investment directly from the U.S. and travel freely between the two nations.</image:caption>
